About Richard Paxton, MD

I’m Dr. Paxton. Thank you for your interest in Canyon View Pediatrics. I find my work as a pediatrician so enjoyable that I can’t imagine doing anything else as a profession. The personal interaction with children and their parents is very rewarding and I’m constantly trying to find new ways to deliver the best possible care. I feel that family is of utmost importance, and this is evident in the way I practice medicine. I love establishing a relationship with entire families and treating children using a family‐centered approach. I am adept at addressing the full spectrum of pediatric concerns, from acute illness and injury to chronic disease and behavioral issues. Preventive medicine and well child care are of particular interest to me, with the knowledge that prevention is often the best medicine.

I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in 1995 with a degree in Exercise Physiology. I stayed at the U for medical school, graduating in 1999, and was a member of the Pediatric Honors Program. My residency training was also done on the U campus at Primary Children’s Hospital. My professors and mentors at Primary Children’s voted me as the resident to whom they would take their own children (The Pediatric Practice Award) in 2002. This award is given to only one resident each year, so I was greatly honored to receive it. With my background in exercise and sport science, I have a particular interest in health and fitness. In an ongoing effort to fight the obesity epidemic, and the related issues (and what many feel is the more serious problem of inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle), I have attended lectures and even whole conferences devoted to this subject. This is one of the biggest public health concerns of our time, and while awareness is growing, there is still a lot of work to be done. I will continue to implement evidence‐based programs which will help children and entire families become more fit and healthy.

I feel it is important to lead by example, so I stay active every day through various kinds of exercise. I also greatly enjoy hiking, fishing, backpacking, camping, movies, various genres of music, watching and playing many sports, and writing. Most of all, I love spending time with my wife and our five sons, as they are the most important people in my life. Helping to raise five boys has taught me a lot, and I continue to learn from them and their amazing mother. Drawing on my experience in medicine and family life to care for patients has been a source of great satisfaction to me. I look forward to many more years of fulfilling pediatric practice.
